What are Values? Your values shape your life

Your values shape your life or do they? Shaping your life – what does that mean anyway?

Life offers opportunities and you can either take them or refuse them. It is your choice…. Fear also plays a big factor in stopping us taking life opportunities that could shape our life differently and also stops us being spontaneous. Spontaneity means that we say yes to an opportunity without worrying whether it should feel good or not.  So when was the last time you were spontaneous?puzzle-ball-1728983__180

Your values shape your life and sometimes our values can get in the way too.  What are your values and how do they shape your life and the lives of the people around you?  Have you revisited your values recently?  Do you even know what they are?

Here are some values which may resonate with you.

  • AbundanceMorals and Ethics
  • Adventure
  • Family
  • Faith
  • Awareness
  • Honesty
  • Reliable
  • Balance
  • Health
  • Confidence
  • Trust
  • Determination

You get where I am going with this, we make a list of values that are important to our lifestyle and belief systems and most of the time we live by them. BUT…. what if some of your values stop you from living your life to the fullest?

  • Fear
  • mistrust
  • disbelief
  • Ethics
  • Expectation
  • Finance
  • Imagination

These values can stop us enjoying our lives, being spontaneous and dreading opportunities.  Spontaneity can be recovered and nurtured with baby steps.  You never know what good might come out of grabbing onto opportunities as they arise.

Make a list of your values and see how many are positive and how many of them are negative.

Expect the unexpected!Best ways to overcome stress

When we live our lives in a very predictable way we are not allowing ourselves to be adventurous.  You can easily expect the unexpected and if you do not like what it is and you cannot change it as it is out of your control, make peace with it.  Let it go.  Let go of the fear, mistrust, and disbelief.  Sometimes things come along the unexpected sale with your favorite jeans, the vacation that you win in a raffle when this happens you have to adjust to the experience and make it happen.  Unfortunately, the human population is striving all the time to keep up with what is going on around them in social media having opportunities pass them by to explore something other than the internet or cyberspace.

How can you live your life to the fullest, living up to your values and beliefs and still have everything you want out of your life?  Firstly stop worrying, worrying spoils things in the moment and stops you looking forward to the future.   Worry and fear are two of the main reasons people are not enjoying themselves.

A sense of humor is a good thing to carry around. There are so many things in the world right now that you have to look at with a sense of humor or you would go mad!!!   Also looking at things from another perspective or another persons’ point of view.   This helps with relieving fear, worry and becoming more spontaneous.

Do it while you can non of us are promised tomorrow so therefore you should look at every moment being the right moment for anything and everything.  Take charge of your time and allow yourself to have the breaks that make life worth living.  Take the vacation time from work that you will lose because you are too busy getting work stuff done, which will still be there when you get back. Do things while you can you do not want to look at your life with regrets.

Live for today, be spontaneous live life with your values and beliefs but make sure they are keeping you in good standing with enjoying life. Remember your values shape your life.

Please share this with others and I would love to hear your comments and views too.!!!

  1. Great post. Addresses a key point we face in this world; Run behind certain goals and forget to live. Also many a times negative values like fear, expecting too much make us a lot unhappy. Good one.

    • Thank you for your comments. Knowing what your values and beliefs are is very important, living by them can be a challenge though.

  2. I am so guilty of forgetting to live. Over the years I became so absorbed in raising my children that I almost forgot that I was human! It seems strange to now try to mingle with the rest of the world….I still have a sense of humor, though. It might be outdated but it’s there!

    • This is a very common thing that happens to many women and then when the kids go off to college the woman does not know what to do. Very important to realize that people wear many hats throughout their day and that balancing them all is extremely important. Glad you still have a sense of humor.

  3. I think some of the most important decisions of my life were made in a spur of a moment. Planning without any room to change is one recipe that will ensure your life stays the same.

    • So glad you have found a way to be spontaneous and still live with your values and beliefs very important for a happy life.

  4. Very inspiring! I’ve done an exercise similar to this before. It really opened my eyes about what I could let go of or change to be more authentic and purposeful in my life.

    • Once you write things down and take a look at them they become more real and they are no longer unconscious habits. Being mindful and staying true to yourself is always the best for your health and well being.

  5. Spontaneous is huge for me. I think it helps to lighten up any mood. I didn’t think of it before but our values can actually stop us from being productive or living our best life. How crazy? I do see the connection though and it makes sense.

    • Anything that lightens up your mood is a great thing to keep doing. Feeling food about yourself and the activity you are doing will keep you so much more healthy. Negative values and beliefs do to us from being productive as you say.

  6. What a very great post ! I am quite a spiritual guy and I actually do a mind power program and I really enjoyed reading this. Everyone should be reading this kind of article. Not only is it motivating and inspiring but also what you are saying is true! Most of us don’t live our life as we should be. We live in reaction and on auto-pilot. We should take action and like you said be more spontaneous! We are always waiting for the right time, the right opportunity or the right sign for us to make a move.. Well actually you should make a move first then the rest will follow. Ask life what you want and life will give you opportunities but you have to take them.

Thanks for this article it really pumped me up !
    Cheers Helen

  7. Hi Helen
Amazing topic, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and making some notes and some comparisons.
I think that the majority of us concentrate on the goals and in doing so forget to enjoy the journey, the problem with that is: we can never be happy! because every time we hit the goals there will always be further goals that we would want to reach thus keep striving and never arriving unless we educate ourselves to enjoy the journey, the here and now!
The most profound quote ever to impact me was this:
Thank you for the thought provoking article.

    • You are very welcome. WE should always be striving to reach goals which keep us motivated, keeping your values and beliefs aligned with those goals. I love your quote also.

  8. A very motivational post. Your words on values are so reflective to me. I started realizing more and more about my own values as I kept on reading. Some of my values do stop me from doing the things I would like to do. I value my image, and it had stopped me from creating a blog or website. But I let go of that value and that’s when I created my first website a week ago! Great post! Hope to see more posts like these.

    • Always good to be reminded of your values, they change from time to time depending on our situations but some of our core ones stay the same throughout our lives.

  9. Hi Helen,

Really good post! A lot of people don’t really give too much thought to their values and just go on with their lives, but they are such a powerful steer on what we think and do.

I try to meditate in the morning and I am part way through a book called ‘The Chimp Paradox’, by Steve Peters, that touches on values, so it’s been at the forefront of my mind 🙂

  10. What a great post. When Is started examining how the life I was living matched up to my values, I realised that I had gotten so caught up in “achieving” that I had lost track of fun. I was so busy being everything I should be for everyone else that I wasn’t having fun. It’s so important to take stock. and yes – a sense of humour is a must 🙂

  11. The problem I have had with my values is that they often conflict with the people in my life. That might seem odd at first.

I grew up in a small farming community in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. People were kind and neighborly. One’s reputation was everything.

When I left home, I found that many people interpret kindness as weakness.

  12. Very motivational stuff! I agree totally that we tend to let fear get in the way of living our lives to the fullest. Sometimes we worry so much about what is going on in other peoples lives, that we forget to focus on our own lives. Great Article!

    • Yes a lot of people do worry about what other people think and never get the chance to live a great life. Living life to the fullest with values in tact is crucial to health and happiness.

  13. This is a great post! We get so busy and so stuck in routines that we forget that there is so much life that can and should be lived. You need to take time to be adventurous, happy and do things while you can enjoy it. Even the little things you do can make a big difference in your mood and your family. Taking time to make memories is huge and most people don’t realize it until it’s too late. Thanks for the reminder!
