Symptoms Under Active Thyroid – Thyroid and Weight Gain

Statistics say that nearly 1 in 7 people have an underactive Thyroid

Many of my clients have symptoms of under active thyroid and are on Thyroid medication. This got me very curious and I decided to look into it a bit more.  As I always look for natural remedies to help myself and my clients I thought there must be something that can be done other than take Thyroid medication for an Under Active Thyroid can cause weight gainunder active Thyroid.

What does it all mean? Hypothyroidism, commonly known as under active Thyroid.  A condition in which the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone.

Hypothyroidism’s deficiency of thyroid hormones can disrupt such things as heart rate, body temperature, and all aspects of metabolism. Hypothyroidism is most prevalent in older women. Although you can have Thyroid issues at any age. Also, men can be affected just as much as women. There are more than 3 million cases per year.

Some of the symptoms may recognize:

  • Weight Gain
  • Fatigue
  • Mood Swings
  • Lethargy
  • Cold Sensitivity
  • Constipation
  • Dry Skin
  • Hair Loss/thining
  • Slow Heart Rate

I had some of these symptoms and mistakenly thought it was part of Menopause symptoms. I know that is what I thought !!!! When I had these symptoms I decided it Under Active Thyroid Symptomswas part of menopause and also decided to ride the storm so to speak.

Then I hurt my knee and went to my Acupuncturist who did some tests and suggested that I also may have a Thyroid issue as I showed symptoms of under active thyroid.

You may think this is funny but I thought to myself “excellent now I know what I have to do” and it is pretty simple as I am not one for medication I looked into what could be done holistically.

Diet Change

Increase the following foods

  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Walnuts
  • Flaxseed
  • Avocados
  • Coconut Oil and Coconut foods

Anything high in Omega 3 fish oil is very beneficial, as I stated in my article about Omega 3, the body does not produce this oil, therefore, you need to either eat the foods rich in Omega 3 or take a supplement.

Foods you should eliminate from your diet as they could inhibit thyroid production.

  • Refined Carbs
  • White Flour
  • Sugar
  • Broccoli
  • Brussel Sprouts         Under active thyroid and broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Kale
  • Peanuts
  • Soy Products
  • Radish
  • Turnips

Gluten Free diets are by far the best and eliminating Cruciferous vegetables as part of an underactive thyroid diet. Goitrogens are naturally occurring substances that can potentially inhibit thyroid production.

Fortunately, the goitrogens in these foods are inactivated by cooking, even by light steaming, so there is no need to forego the valuable antioxidant and cancer- protective effects cruciferous vegetables afford.

If you are eating these vegetables raw then there may be a need to bring this to the attention of your health care provider.

Supplements to Consider adding to your diet.

  • 50-100mg of Selenium
  • 10-15mg Zinc
  • Vitamin A 2,000-4,000 I.U. (this will aid if you are taking the thyroid medication)
  • Vitamin C 750-1000mg
  • Vitamin E (natural)2000 iu
  • B Complex
  • D3 800 Iu
  • Fish Oil 600mg epa 400mg dha
  • A good pro-biotic is a must.

Supplements should not be added to your regime without consulting your health care provider.  Also, make sure you know what works best for your body as one size does not fit everyone.  If you have allergies these also must be taken into consideration.

If you do not already exercise then implement at least 20 minutes of walking and exercise per day.  Also, make sure you get time to relax or meditate throughout the day. Yoga is also a very good way to keep in balance.

Bach Flower Remedies are also another alternative which can be very effective for underactive Thyroid.

  • Vervain                         Flower Remedies for Underactive Thyroid
  • Cherry Plum
  • Impatiens
  • Pine
  • Willow
  • Elm
  • Wild Rose
  • Crab Apple

Again not taking all of them at once and making sure you choose what is right for you.

The Thyroid is the throat Chakra, so keep a journal of your thoughts and things you would like to express but can not out loud. The color for the Throat Chakra is Blue so visualize a nice bright blue.  Also take up singing or art to express yourself.

I personally am taking more Omega 3, increased my exercise and doing Acupuncture and I feel so much better, now to shed the extra few pounds that have been sticking with me.

    I eat LOADS of thyroid aiding foods…. However my thyroid is still a bit slow so I have turned to some natural assistance in pill form! No prescriptions, but specific vitamins and minerals to aid my thyroi!

      Yes having a supplement that aids the Thyroid is a good choice. I take a liquid form at the moment and can see a difference. I also use Positive affirmations and visualization

    Great post. I just started a blog as I have Hashimotos, allergies, asthma, autoimmune issues and lymphedema. All of this issues cause anxiety. I found going all organic has helped me. I’m also gluten free. I tried the holistic approach with a holistic doctor but the supplements he had me on wound up giving me kidney failure. Now I’m scared to try new supplements.

      I understand I would not want to try anything either but what might help you is EFT there are no side effects to this and it is a great healing tools

    This article is very informative. Spreading awareness among the reader about thyroid is quite noble as there are many people who are unaware of how their thyroid activity could affect their overall health. Also the diet and ways to combat thyroid is very helpful.

    I have been told I have a low/under-active thyroid and I actually really think it’s starting to affect me, even if I eat a very healthful diet.

      Perhaps you should see your health care provider and get it checked out then you can see what you change in your diet and your supplements.

    Interesting post. I was just tested for thyroid and everything came back normal. I had no idea there were so many new cases each year. I imagine those are just the diagnosed ones. Imagine how many go undetected.

      You are so right, there are probably many people with this issue and do not know it. Watching your diet and adding the correct supplements go a ways to help keep things in balance. Again knowing your own body is key to good health.

    As i was reading the symptoms I was thinking to myself- I feel a lot of these daily at the moment. Looks like I will be taking a trip to the doctors and picking up some salmon and avos!

    I have a friend who has asked me about my thyroid. I’ve always been someone who sleeps a lot. As a child and teen I’d sometimes sleep all afternoon and even now I love sleep. I don’t know what parents don’t, but I don’t want to sleep my life away. Maybe I should look into this with my doctor.

      Possible but there are lots of other reasons for sleeping I would definitely find out about it and then seek alternative therapies to help you.

    I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism from the young of at birth. always taken some type of synthroid or levothyroxine. the dosage fluctuated over the years but has leveled out. I follow the diet you have recommended here for years except fro some of the foods I should avoid…brussel sprouts? Really? I love those little guys. But anyways I did learn some things from this article so thanks for that. I did not really think of the chakra aspect of this. Kinda interesting. I feel I express myself pretty well through blogging and I do journal to some extent. more here in the last week actually for whatever reason. thanks for the post, Helen. this is getting bookmarked and I am doing more research on the throat chakra as well.

    Thanks you so much for this article. I have every single one of the symptoms except the hair loss so I’m off to get myself checked out now. I already avoided refined carbs and sugar but maybe theres a few other things I should cut out too!

      Always best to be aware of what your body is telling you and exploring the natural alternatives you can use. Sugar should be cut out of your diet for so many other reasons as well.

    I can honestly say that I had no idea about under active thyroids, the best diet to combat it or anything else related to it until I read this post! It really goes to show how little information the average joe like myself has… Which is a worry really, since I feel like I’m not prepared enough for if/when my daughter develops things like this…

      There is not enough information about alternative diets and supplements for anything that we go through. We need to be going back to how we started when time began and using plants and herbs again.

    Very interesting post, thank you for this. It’s amazing how little information our doctors provide us on conditions like this and the potential natural cures. Pharmacological solutions seem to dominate the medical world.
    We need more focus like this on natural cures and things we can do in our daily habits.
    I have to admit I was surprised to see many of favorite veggies, like broccoli and brussel sprouts on the bad list. Is there an overriding reason they share? Any further insight you could add on this area would be helpful and appreciated.
