Statistics say that nearly 1 in 7 people have an underactive Thyroid
Many of my clients have symptoms of under active thyroid and are on Thyroid medication. This got me very curious and I decided to look into it a bit more. As I always look for natural remedies to help myself and my clients I thought there must be something that can be done other than take Thyroid medication for an under active Thyroid.
Hypothyroidism’s deficiency of thyroid hormones can disrupt such things as heart rate, body temperature, and all aspects of metabolism. Hypothyroidism is most prevalent in older women. Although you can have Thyroid issues at any age. Also, men can be affected just as much as women. There are more than 3 million cases per year.
Some of the symptoms may recognize:
- Weight Gain
- Mood Swings
- Cold Sensitivity
- Dry Skin
- Hair Loss/thining
- Slow Heart Rate

I had some of these symptoms and mistakenly thought it was part of Menopause symptoms. I know that is what I thought !!!! When I had these symptoms I decided it was part of menopause and also decided to ride the storm so to speak.
Then I hurt my knee and went to my Acupuncturist who did some tests and suggested that I also may have a Thyroid issue as I showed symptoms of under active thyroid.
You may think this is funny but I thought to myself “excellent now I know what I have to do” and it is pretty simple as I am not one for medication I looked into what could be done holistically.
Increase the following foods
- Coconut Oil and Coconut foods
Anything high in Omega 3 fish oil is very beneficial, as I stated in my article about Omega 3, the body does not produce this oil, therefore, you need to either eat the foods rich in Omega 3 or take a supplement.
Foods you should eliminate from your diet as they could inhibit thyroid production.
- Refined Carbs
- White Flour
- Brussel Sprouts
- Soy Products
Gluten Free diets are by far the best and eliminating Cruciferous vegetables as part of an underactive thyroid diet. Goitrogens are naturally occurring substances that can potentially inhibit thyroid production.
Fortunately, the goitrogens in these foods are inactivated by cooking, even by light steaming, so there is no need to forego the valuable antioxidant and cancer- protective effects cruciferous vegetables afford.
If you are eating these vegetables raw then there may be a need to bring this to the attention of your health care provider.
Supplements to Consider adding to your diet.
- 50-100mg of Selenium
- 10-15mg Zinc
- Vitamin A 2,000-4,000 I.U. (this will aid if you are taking the thyroid medication)
- Vitamin C 750-1000mg
- Vitamin E (natural)2000 iu
- B Complex
- D3 800 Iu
- Fish Oil 600mg epa 400mg dha
- A good pro-biotic is a must.
Supplements should not be added to your regime without consulting your health care provider. Also, make sure you know what works best for your body as one size does not fit everyone. If you have allergies these also must be taken into consideration.
If you do not already exercise then implement at least 20 minutes of walking and exercise per day. Also, make sure you get time to relax or meditate throughout the day. Yoga is also a very good way to keep in balance.
Bach Flower Remedies are also another alternative which can be very effective for underactive Thyroid.
Again not taking all of them at once and making sure you choose what is right for you.
The Thyroid is the throat Chakra, so keep a journal of your thoughts and things you would like to express but can not out loud. The color for the Throat Chakra is Blue so visualize a nice bright blue. Also take up singing or art to express yourself.
I personally am taking more Omega 3, increased my exercise and doing Acupuncture and I feel so much better, now to shed the extra few pounds that have been sticking with me.
